Between homework, activities, and everyone’s different schedules, sleep is often the first thing to get squeezed. We get it, but sleep isn’t just about feeling rested. It plays a huge role in your child’s physical health, mood, and ability to learn and grow.
Why Sleep Matters So Much
Sleep needs shift as kids grow, but teens still need 8 to 10 hours a night. During those hours, the body regulates appetite, repairs muscles, strengthens the immune system, and supports growth while the brain processes memories and builds focus. Without enough sleep, kids and teens are far more likely to struggle with anxiety, mood swings, and trouble paying attention.
• Sleep deficiency is more common than you’d think 44% of children don’t get enough sleep for their age, and 77% of teens sleep less than recommended. The good news? Kids with a regular bedtime are half as likely to feel tired during the day.
Simple Ways to Help Your Family Sleep Better
• Set the mood. Dim the lights in the evening, tidy up the room before bed, and keep the space cool and comfortable.
• Power down early. Turn off screens 1 to 2 hours before bedtime, and keep phones charging outside the bedroom once that window starts.
• Keep it consistent. A steady bedtime and wake time even on weekends makes falling asleep and waking up so much easier.
• Make space to talk. A few open-ended questions about their day can help little (and big) worries feel lighter before lights-out.
